Just thinking out loud here: would it make more sense to do the cmake conversion first and get rid of the python stuff? What do you think?

Although the issue was closed and the branch deleted, I recovered it and made a commit out of it. I didn't have the time to go through it in details before today, unfortunately.

Side note: @cethyel sometimes Slavek and I are busy and don't have the time to promptly review your PRs in details. Please do not close them, just be patient. Or at least before closing them reach out to us on IRC/Jabber 😄
